Sun Hydraulics Corporation Introduces First of Electro-Proportional Cartridge Valves

SARASOTA, Fla., Mar 20, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ --

Sun Hydraulics Corporation (Nasdaq: SNHY) today announced the release of the first of its electro-proportional screw-in hydraulic cartridge valves. Initial product offerings include proportional pressure control valves and proportional flow control valves.

Proportional valves respond to an electrical signal to regulate a hydraulic system. In layman's terms, they can be compared to a dimmer switch that controls the intensity of household lights. In the case of hydraulics, altering the electrical current to the valve regulates the pressure or flow rate of the valve.

"Until a few years ago, Sun only offered non-electrical cartridge valves," said Sun Hydraulics president, Allen Carlson. "While we have a significant share of the non-solenoid/non-proportional market, it has been difficult to compete for valve package business where electrical control is required. The addition of proportional valves to our product line allows us to be much more aggressive and competitive in the valve package area."

Sun's new proportional products fit into the same cavities and use the same flow paths as other existing products. This design approach allows the new proportional products to be easily substituted for existing, non- proportional products and all of the new products can be used in existing Sun manifolds.

Proportional cartridge valves utilize Sun's field-proven floating construction, which allows products to operate reliably at high pressures. All of Sun's proportional cartridges will operate at pressures up to 5000 psi. Flow ratings range from 0.1 to 200 gallons per minute.

Sun Hydraulics new proportional products will be on display in the Company's booth (Hall 19, booth B24) at the Hannover Fair, in Hannover, Germany, April 7 - 12, 2003. Visit to see highlights on the Hannover Fair and complete technical information about these new products.
